Matagouri Hut

Matagouri Hut

Banks Peninsula

Matagouri Hut is located on Banks Peninsula, just 1 hour and 20-minutes drive from Christchurch City and a 5-minute drive to Akaroa. It's set on the same property as Onawe Hut.

The one-room tent-hut hybrid is set high up in a hidden spot on the property, surrounded by native trees and bush. A short 10-second stroll takes you to a deck platform with an outdoor bath and dining table - perfect for soaking up the glorious Banks Peninsula views.

It's a unique little building - with the roof of the hut in canvas, solid walls forming the sides and large french doors creating a completely-glass sidewall. There is a feeling of being very much part of the natural surrounds.

The interior decor is simple and stylish with a peaceful ambience. The timber and natural colours and textures combine to create a beautiful space to relax.

You'll see and hear lots of native birds including tui, wood pigeons, and bellbirds. Sheep lazily graze on the nearby hillsides.

Matagouri Hut really is the best of both worlds if you're looking for accommodation on the Banks Peninsula... A beautiful, restful hideaway - but just 5 minutes from the activities, shops and cafes of Akaroa.

If you want a break from cooking at any stage, Akaroa is just a 5-minute drive away, and you'll have plenty to choose from there. Your host, Harry, recommends trying the Mandala Restaurant and Bully Hayes!

The closest place for supplies is the 4-Square in Akaroa.

  • Things to do

Matagouri Farm is close to the action for people wanting to visit the sights of Akaroa, but at the same time, far away from the hustle and bustle. Your visit can be as action-packed or as relaxing as you choose.

In Akaroa, just 5-minutes drive away, you'll find shops, cafes and restaurants to enjoy. You'll also find heaps of activities such as kayaking and swimming with dolphins.

Those that wish to just chill-out and enjoy time spent at the hut, can take a short stroll around the immediate surrounds to take in the extensive views and nearby stream. Enjoy a sunset soak in the outdoor bath followed by a good boardgame. Make sure you bring a good book - and just take the chance to relax.

  • Your Hosts

Your host at Matagouri Hut is boat builder and designer, Harry Thurston.

The Thurston family have owned the property on the Banks Peninsula for 32 years, they love that it's so close to Akaroa, but at the same time so tucked away from the hustle and bustle of town and city life.

Matagouri Hut is named after the matagouri bush that is found in abundance around the hut.
