Mikiwai Cabin

Mikiwai Cabin

Wairarapa

Mikiwai Cabin is located in the Wairarapa - approximately 10 minutes from the township of Carterton and an hour and 30 minutes from Wellington city.

Set on the edge of the Wairarapa plains, Mikiwai Cabin is the place to go when you want to press pause on life. With bush and farmland views, native birds, and a couple of super cute Kune Kune pigs as neighbours - you'll enjoy the peace and simplicity of this beautiful spot.

A combined living, dining and kitchen space greets you as you step through the door. The honey-coloured timber interior of the cabin is atmospheric and cosy - like a warm hug.

A comfy bed is accessed via a ladder and tucked up in the loft. Enjoy stargazing through the double skylights over the bed and soak up those dark star-studded Wairapara skies.

Outside is a multi-layered outdoor living area. A BBQ is provided for cooking up an alfresco feast. A built-in outdoor seating area provides a great place to take in the views. An outdoor bath set into the deck is the cherry on top.

  • things to do

Enjoy some rest and relaxation at the cabin... Have a quiet game of draughts, snooze, or enjoy the views from the outdoor bath.

A two-minute drive away is one of the best spots for a bush walk in gorgeous nature. With an amazing lookout over rolling farmland, this walk is a great way to breathe with the trees. It's decked out with boardwalks, immersed in nature, and home to tuis and 500-year-old trees. Mt Holdsworth and Waiohine Gorge are other great options for walks.

If food and wine are more your thing, there is a selection of vineyards in Gladstone (15 minutes away) or Martinborough (30 minutes away). A great way to soak up the rays and officially activate holiday mode!

  • your hosts

Miriam and Kolja, and their two children Freddy and Pippa, are your hosts at Mikiwai Cabin.

Miriam and Kolja have owned the property since 2016 when they converted from Wellington city life to a quieter country lifestyle. Watching the property evolve through the seasons and plantlife growing has been a pleasure for the family.

The cabin’s shell was already on the property when they first purchased it, so they saw it as the perfect opportunity to bring it back to life again. The original plan was to share it with family and friends, but the final result was so special they wanted to share it with even more people to enjoy!

Mikiwai means water ridge. The cabin is situated on the side of the ridge overlooking a small valley where the stream flows through. When it’s quiet, you can hear the stream bubbling away in the distance…
