Erehwon Cabin

Erehwon Cabin

Rangiora, Canterbury

Erehwon Cabin is located in North Canterbury, only 5 minutes from Okuku and 45 minutes from Christchurch City.

More substantial than many of our other glamping options, this rustic cabin, loaded with atmosphere, is the perfect place for couples or families wanting to escape the hustle and bustle of city life without giving up the luxuries of home.

The cabin is filled with a feeling of warmth. Unique furniture pieces are dotted throughout. With two cosy bedrooms and an open-plan living and kitchen area, there's plenty of space. The stylish bathroom has a luxurious bath and laundry space is also provided - making this the perfect spot for an extended stay in the country.

A stroll through the property takes you to Okuku River, where you can fish, swim, or relax by the water's edge. On the way, say hello to the friendly horses and sheep.

As night descends, cook up a pizza feast in the pizza oven. Then treat yourself to a soak in the outdoor wood-fired cedar hot tub, big enough for everyone, or the alfresco copper shower under the stars.

  • eating and drinking

Erehwon Cottage is self-catering. Just bring your own food and drink, and cook meals using the gas stove and electric oven provided in your kitchen, and BBQ located on the deck. You'll find all the cutlery, crockery, pots, and pans that you'll need. You're also welcome to harvest any vegetables from the garden.

In the evening, cook up a storm with the wood-fired pizza oven on the lawn (perfectly paired with a glass of your favourite under the starry night sky!).

Rangiora, 18 minutes away, or Oxford, 25 minutes away, offers a delightful array of restaurants and takeout choices. If you're willing to venture a bit farther, Christchurch City is 45 minutes away with even more exceptional dining options.

The nearest store for stocking up on food and supplies is in Rangiora.

  • things to do

There are plenty of ways to unwind at Erehwon Cabin... Relax in the outdoor lounge chairs next to the wood-fired pizza oven, have a tranquil picnic on the lush grass, or opt for a hot soak in the lovely cedar wood-fired hot tub.

A leisurely stroll of just 5-10 minutes will lead you to a picturesque riverbank where you can go fishing or just chill. Along the way, you can greet and interact with the horses and sheep on the property.

For those inclined to explore the region, a 12-minute drive will take you to the Mount Thomas Forest Walk. A 17-minute drive takes you to the Glentui bush walk, which can extend to a walk to Mount Richardson.

For something extra special, there’s also a helipad available for guests arriving by helicopter. Please get in touch with us by email at [email protected] for more information or to arrange your arrival.

  • your hosts

Your hosts at Erehwon Cabin are Judith & Samantha, mother and daughter.

Samantha and her horses found a spot to call home and she created a cabin next to the Okuku River, which offers stunning natural beauty - right on her back doorstep.

Samantha has embarked on a different journey in her life, while keeping her beautiful property and her retired horses there, allowing others to enjoy the charm and explore the countryside experiences.

'Erehwon' is 'nowhere' spelled backward. As the property feels like you're in the middle of nowhere, it's just you, nature, and the birds!

It was lovely to meet the host and arrive at a stunning location. The house is built for morning sun and to see the stars at night. The cabin style was very earthy and so well decorated, I was impressed. I brought my little Shih Tzu with me, and he was fascinated by the chickens, who were well enclosed, of course. There's a lovely view of mountains and trees from the large windows. It's a bit of an adjustment coming back into Christchurch after staying at such a lovely place in the country.

The hosts were welcoming and very accommodating. The cabin was beautiful, warm and clean, the area was so peaceful, like I was on a special holiday not just 20 mins from home. The horses and animals were very sweet and the river very close. A very enjoyable stay.

Loved staying at Erewhon! Only a short drive away but a lovely spot. We enjoyed all the offerings at the cabin including the pizza oven, hot tub and indoor wood burner. It was so cosy that when a sudden storm hit, we stayed in watching movies. Judith had thoughtfully left everything ready and prepared for us and even included fresh bread and pizza dough for the pizza oven. We will definitely be back!

We had a lovely weekend away. The host was warm and welcoming. She even baked us a pie. The pizza oven and hot tub were highlights of our stay and the cabin was well equipped with everything you might need, including coffee, tea, spices and herbs, even ingredients for homemade pizza dough and fresh eggs from the chickens.
