Hurunui Jacks

Hurunui Jacks

Hokitika

Hurunui Jacks is situated on the West Coast of the South Island, just 12 kilometres from the centre of Hokitika, and just metres from the spectacular West Coast Wilderness cycle trail.

Hurunui Jacks is an unforgettable glamping experience. Your luxury canvas tent rests on a private spot beside the Kaniere River, nestled amongst ancient virgin forest. Surrounded by National Park and Conservation land - it's 15 acres of total peace and tranquillity - and the perfect couples getaway.

A paradise for wildlife...bush robins, fantails, tuis, bellbirds, and native wood pigeons - all throughout the moss-covered rimu, matai and totara trees.

The glampsite consists of a large and roomy canvas tent, with a wood-burning stove. A fully covered and enclosed camp kitchen and bathroom are set just a few metres away. You can either cook on the gas rings or try camp-style cooking over an open fire.

Enjoy a glass of wine and a soak in an outdoor bath under the stars. Then, tucked up in your comfortable bed, between linen sheets and under a goose down duvet, you'll be able to lie back and relax to the sound of the river… Lose yourself in the West Coast wilderness. Enjoy the peace… and the ethereal feeling of being surrounded by ancient bush, in a truly unique landscape.

  • Eating and Drinking

Bring your own food and cook using the gas rings or hotplate over the brazier. You'll find all the cutlery, crockery, pots and pans that you will need in the camp kitchen.

The nearest supermarket for supplies is the New World supermarket in Hokitika, approximately 15 minutes drive.

Alternatively, treat yourselves to some of the great local nosh! Fat Pipis Pizza has the best pizza ever and Porky's Takeaways are rumoured to have the best fish and chips on the Coast.

For coffee connoisseurs, Ritual and Ramble have the best coffee in town and lots of healthy food. Plus the best cheese scones! The Hokitika Sandwich company also do a mean bottomless single-origin coffee from Havana and was just voted the best-toasted sammie in NZ. Your host, Wendy also roasts her own coffee on the property and you'll find this in the camp kitchen for your use. You can't get much fresher than that!

  • Things To Do

Hurunui Jacks is the perfect place to retreat from the world and completely relax. At the glampsite, you can simply enjoy a slower pace with a soak in the outdoor bath or a cup of coffee by the riverside. Feed the very friendly eels (they love a bit of bacon!), or challenge each other to a game of dominoes.

If you'd like to explore, there's a short bushwalk on the property - walk through the stunning moss-covered West Coast rainforest. Jump on a bike and do a section of the West Coast Wilderness Trail, which runs right past the property.

Hurunui Jacks is only 15 minutes from the metropolis of Hokitika. Check out the arty shops and fantastic food the town has to offer. There's nothing like Porky's fish and chips and a fire on the beach to watch the sunset.

If you want to go further afield, drive up to Lake Kaniere, past the amazing Dorothy Falls, and the stunning Hokitika Gorge.  Call in for a beer at one of the local pubs - The Kokatahi Hotel or The Empire Hotel at Kaniere - and meet some of the eclectic locals.

  • Your Hosts

Wendy and Fletch were originally from Outram, just south of Dunedin and moved to the West Coast in September 2018. Fletch had spent many years in the bush, working in forestry and Wendy had a busy life owning two cafes and roasting coffee during her time in Dunedin. They decided it was time for a change of pace - and set about finding a West Coast slice of paradise to call their own. They found it when they discovered that Hurunui Jacks was for sale!

The lure of the bush, glamping, the river and ponds was just too tempting to pass up, so they went full steam ahead to start a new life on the coast. The first thing they did was tackle a much-needed revamp of the glamping site - and after a lot of hard work (and a few weather-related hold-ups) Wendy and Fletch are finally ready to welcome guests back to Hurunui Jacks!
