Fox Hut

West Coast, near Punakaiki

Fox Hut is set on a coastal clifftop property on the famous Great Coast Highway, halfway between Greymouth and Westport and just a seven-minute drive from Punakaiki (site of the 'Pancake Rocks').

Fox Hut is the 'sister hut' to Woodpecker Hut, the original hut on the property, made famous by its incredible views and simple, but lovely rustic vibe.

Fox Hut is modelled off a pitched roof gold miners hut with an enclosed lean-to kitchen and sitting area. Far from the basic hut design of yesteryear though, Fox hut oozes rustic luxury. Recycled timber lined walls are accompanied by rich velvet armchairs. Accents of brass, plush floor rugs and sheepskins add to the feel of quality and comfort. Huge glass windows frame the captivating ocean view.

A wood-fired cedar hot tub is set into the deck at the front of the hut - the perfect place to sit and soak - and watch the sun go down on the wild West Coast.

Winter or Summer, Fox Hut is the perfect couples retreat. Romantic, private and close to nature - you'll leave this place rested and reconnected.

  • Eating and Drinking

Fox Hut is self-catering. Just bring your own food and drink, and cook meals using the BBQ and facilities provided in your hut kitchen. You'll find all the cutlery, crockery, pots and pans that you'll need.

If you want a break from cooking at any stage, Punakaiki is just an 8-minute drive away and Charleston is approximately 12 minutes away. Both have some (limited) cafes and restaurants to choose from.

Supermarkets for food shopping can be found in either Westport (40-minute drive) or Greymouth (60-minute drive), so best to stock up before you arrive!

  • Things to do

Designed as the ultimate glamping accommodation to unplug and relax - you'll appreciate the chance to just chill out. Soak in the hot tub or curl up with a good book.

If you are looking for something to do - you'll find it. Nearby you'll find beautiful Safety or Woodpecker Bay - head down to check out the caves, swim and walk on the beach.

Down the road in Punakaiki, you can take in the natural wonder of the spectacular Pancake Rocks with a short loop walk. Fox River (a short 2 minute drive north of the hut) has a scenic 2 hour bush walk up the river valley and the Pororari River walk (8 minutes drive south) is a 'must do'.

Kayaking, underwater rafting, glow-worm caves and even expert stargazing are all just some of the things to do in the immediate area.

  • Your Hosts

Fox Hut is the second hut to be built on this land by us (Liz Henderson and Sonia Minnaar), founders of Canopy Camping Escapes. We found the beautiful land at Fox River, thanks to Jed, a local and the host of The Hexagon, just up the road at Woodpecker Bay. We built Woodpecker Hut first, which has proved so popular, that we decided to build a second!

Fox Hut was built by the same team of dedicated builders that created Woodpecker Hut. The same craftsmanship, artistry and love that went into Woodpecker Hut have also gone into Fox Hut. We love the way it's come together.

Because we're not local to Fox River, Jed Smith will be your host at Fox Hut. Jed has lived in and around the area most of his life. He's a wealth of knowledge about the region and super-friendly and helpful. He'll be available for any help you need while staying at Fox Hut.
