10 Scenic Glamping Escapes with Wood-Fired Hot Tubs in New Zealand

There's something about a wood-fired hot tub that elevates an entire stay. Stoking the fire, watching steam rise against a backdrop of mountains or sea, and slowly sinking into the warmth as the sky changes colour. From the Wairarapa to the West Coast, and the Waikato to Taranaki, New Zealand is full of glamping escapes built around exactly this experience.

Here are ten of our most scenic escapes where a wood-fired hot tub is very much part of the stay.

How Does a Wood-Fired Hot Tub Work?

A wood-fired hot tub is heated by a small firebox attached to the tub itself, rather than gas or electricity. On arrival, the fire needs to be lit and stoked for around 2 to 4 hours before the water reaches a comfortable soaking temperature, so it's worth getting the fire going as soon as you arrive if you're planning an evening soak.

Most escapes also offer a hot tub lighting service for a small additional fee, where your host lights the fire ahead of your arrival so the water is already warming up by the time you get there. Once hot, wood-fired tubs hold their heat well, needing only occasional top-ups of wood for the remainder of your stay.
