The Butler's Quarters

The Butler's Quarters

Pōrangahau, Hawke's Bay

The Butler's Quarters is located 10 minutes from Pōrangahau, and 1 hour and 30 minutes from Napier in the Hawke's Bay region.

The aptly named 'Butler's Quarters' is the creation of Andrew and Merys Butler. Originally an old shearers' quarters built in the early nineteen hundreds, the old building was derelict but had beautiful bones. The couple has spent many months bringing it back to life as a gorgeous off-grid escape.

Set at the top of a hill on a picturesque farm, large glass doors take in the stunning views. On a hot Hawkes' Bay day, open them up to enjoy easy access to the wrap-around deck.

The cabin has an open-plan living and kitchen space with a welcoming wood burner to keep you cosy for atmospheric winter stays. A hallway from the lounge space leads you past a bathroom, to a separate bedroom containing a comfortable super king-size bed.

Outside, at the front of the cabin is an outdoor room. Sit with a morning coffee and watch the sun come up - or relax in the hanging chair with a good book. The outdoor bathtub is the place to be after dark - for stargazing under a mesmerizing night sky.

Enjoy the rolling farmland and native tree surroundings...all to yourself. You may even see the occasional wild deer roam past!

  • your hosts

Your hosts at The Butler's Quarters are Andrew and Merys, their children Tomos, Tegan, and Taran, and pet dogs Mabli and Scooby.

The family have lived on the property for four years since moving from Wales, UK.

After traveling the world, Andrew and Merys decided their favourite place to be was the countryside. Their dream was to buy a farm, and after years of hard work, they finally bought their stunning Central Hawkes' Bay property. With 316 hectares of land and approximately 100 hectares of bush and pine forest, they farm 900 ewes and a 70 Angus cow herd. They are proud to be an entirely Carbon Neutral farming business.

The original building for the Butler's Quarters dates back to the early 1900s. It was formerly used as the shearer's quarters by shearing gangs. The elders in the community are thrilled to see the old building back to its former glory...with a few adjustments!
