Twisted Twig Hut

Twisted Twig Hut

Near Rotorua

Twisted Twig is located halfway between Rotorua and Whakatane, just 45 minutes in each direction, and only an hour from Tauranga.

Concealed within the seclusion of 15 acres of breathtaking native bush, this little hut is an exquisite bush sanctuary.

Inside the hut, there is a queen-sized bed and a comfortable couch to relax. Stay cosy and warm with both indoor and outdoor fires. An undercover kitchen and dining area have everything you need to cook and enjoy a delicious alfresco meal. A bathroom, a few meters away from the hut, includes an outdoor bath, bringing a whole new meaning to the phrase 'forest bathing'.

Enjoy watching the fantails flit through the bush from the comfort of the swinging egg chair on the deck. Listen to the symphony of native birdsong fills the air, and with a touch of luck, you may even catch a glimpse of a kiwi. A bush walk on the property leads you to a glow worm grotto.

If you find peace in the forest, Twisted Twig Hut is the escape for you.

  • your hosts

Your hosts at Twisted Twig are Shelwyn and Dave Gardner, along with their furry friends Jessie the Foxy and Lucy the Labrador.

Shelwyn and Dave fell in love with their stunning 20-hectare property and picturesque surroundings 17 years ago, while owning the neighbouring dairy farm.

Inspired by a glamping trip to England in 2015, they restored the hut and ordered a tent from The Netherlands (Twisted Twig Tent is the second escape on this amazing property). Despite starting a new business during the COVID-19 pandemic, New Zealanders seemed eager to embrace the opportunity to explore their beautiful country in the form of glamping - and so Twisted Twig was created.

The name 'Twisted Twig' was inspired by Shelwyn's walks through the bush, where she noticed all sorts of twisted twigs and trees.
