** Note for bookings during June/July/August. You must have your own 4WD ute or truck to access Shortland Station (SUVs or Subaru type cars are not adequate). There can be snow on the property and in the region affecting access**
Shortlands Station is a high country sheep station at the base of the Kakanui Ranges, in the Danseys Pass corner of the Maniototo. It's less than 2 hours from Dunedin and just under 2 1/2 hours from Queenstown.
'Manuka Views' is one of two glamping 'sheds' on the property, along with sister shed, 'Nobbler Creek'. Manuka Views is set at the on the edge of a creek overlooking golden tussock hill country.
The design of Manuka Views is inspired by the classic corrugated iron farm buildings you see throughout New Zealand. It combines a stylish, covered, open-air kitchen and bathroom - with a luxurious and cosy enclosed bedroom and lounging space.
Guests will experience a stunning mountain vista, with 360-degree views of the surrounding high country. A cedar wood-fired hot tub sits in a prime position to take it all in while soaking in steaming hot, fresh mountain water. At night, the view of the night sky and stars is amazing.
Manuka Views is the ultimate, peaceful glamping retreat. Enjoy the tranquil sounds of the creek, the birds, and the unbelievable quiet - with the only interruption being the comforting sound of the odd sheep baaaing nearby.
Note: in June/July/August you MUST have your own 4WD truck or ute (SUVs or Subaru style not adequate) to access Shortland Station.
Make sure you download or print this handy info sheet with directions and host contact details prior to your journey. You may not have mobile reception at all times.
Shortlands Station is 1 hour and 45 minutes from Dunedin, just under 2 1/2 hours from Queenstown, and 4 1/2 hours from Christchurch. It is 10kms from Naseby.
The Google Maps directions to Mccready Road will take you to the entrance to Shortlands Station (marked by a large stone ‘mailbox’). To get to Shortlands Shed, DO NOT turn down Mccready Road. Carry on driving up Danseys Pass Road for 2kms. Just before the concrete bridge, turn right at the poplar trees and follow the fence line and camp signs all the way to the shed.
The shed sleeps up to 2 people in a Queen sized bed. Full linen, towels and bedding are supplied. The queen bed has a goose topper, feather duvet and is made up with 100% cotton linen. There are plenty of spare duvets and blankets.
The kitchen is an outdoor, covered space with a 4 gas-ring hob for cooking. You'll find all the pots, pans, crockery, cutlery and utensils you'll need to cook. There is bench space for food preparation and hot water for dishes. A large Chilly bin is inset in the concrete floor and a cupboard is provided for food storage.
The bathroom facilities include a fully tiled open air bathroom. A monsoon headed hot water shower has part walls for privacy and beautiful views of the surrounding mountains. There is a fully flushing toilet.
An alpine wood-fired hot tub is provided for the ultimate 'soak-with-a-view'. Fill the tub with fresh (heated) mountain water, stoke up the fire - then hop in and ENJOY.
Manuka Views is completely off-the-grid. Hot water is heated using a gas califont and cooking gas is supplied via LPG gas bottles. Solar power provides lighting and a wood-burning stove provides warmth. There is no WIFI at the shed, and no power points for device charging.
Manuka Views is open for winter stays, but bear in mind that you're booking an off-grid escape - without the usual luxuries of a fully powered home. Glamping is still a form of camping!
There is lots of warm bedding, a wood-burner in the shed, and lots of other elements to make your stay cosy and atmospheric. If you book a stay in winter, bring your sense of adventure, brush up on your fire-lighting skills, and be prepared for the elements!
Two wheel drive cars can be driven right up to the site and parked just outside the gate for easy coming and going. Good 4WD vehicles will be needed for Winter stays.

We absolutely loved our stay at Manuka Views - it was just what we needed to recharge our batteries and refresh our souls after a very difficult year. It felt like we were miles away from anywhere, and in our own little private paradise. We've already booked again and can't wait to come back. Tash and Charles are lovely, and we feel so grateful for them sharing their beautiful slice of paradise with us.

We loved every minute on Manuka View at Shortlands Station. The views are breathtaking and you never get tired of them. It is so quiet and tranquil, the perfect place to read, chill, recharge and walk. We loved having no electricity, going to bed early and waking up early. Stoking the fire made it cosy and warm. The best place to forget everything and remembering again what is really important in your life.

Our stay felt very special: wonderful landscape, loved star-gazing from the hot tub, no-one in sight, just some friendly sheep. The place is cleverly designed to maximise indoor outdoor living.
