Rabbit Island

Rabbit Island

Nelson

Rabbit Island Glamping is the latest addition to the accommodation offered by Appleby House and Rabbit Island Huts. Just 25 minutes to Nelson city and right on the Great Taste Trail, this is a fun-filled and delightful way to experience the Nelson and Tasman region.

Jane and John started with Appleby House (a hotel/bed and breakfast hybrid), and in 2016 opened up the Rabbit Island Huts, with their first luxury tent following in September 2017.

The Rabbit Island glamping tent is situated close to the Rabbit Island Huts, but separated by a little bridge that crosses a pretty wetland area. The tent has its own BBQ, basic kitchen and running water for washing up, but also shares some (very luxurious) bathroom and larger kitchen facilities with the Rabbit Island Huts.

The glamping experience is very self-contained and private, so you can choose to relax in your own company - or you'll also have the option to mingle, and join other guests for a glass of wine and a chat around the communal campfire.

The accommodation is set on 25 acres of Waimea Plains land, beautifully located for peace and quiet. 360 degree views of mountains, the Richmond Ranges and the Waimea Estuary stretch out around you. The Great Taste Cycle Trail is 200m from the property so you can bring your bikes and explore the various wineries and craft breweries in the area. Or just enjoy the beautiful Rabbit Island beach on foot - 1.5 kms down the road.

There is plenty to do on and around the property, but if you'd like to get further afield, the Abel Tasman National Park is just a 45 minute drive away. The crafty types will enjoy the arts and craft trail and markets of Nelson, and the foodies will love the great quality cafes and restaurants of nearby Mapua, not to mention the craft beer and wine tasting in the local area.

Rabbit Island Glamping is just 25 minutes from Nelson City. Follow the Google Map directions to get there. Your hosts, Jane or John are usually nearby to greet you and show you to your tent, but if they are not on hand straight way, simply park your car in the carpark (first entrance on right as you enter the driveway), head over the bridge and follow the path to your right. You’ll see a second bridge, and go over this to your glamping tent. Everything will be ready and waiting for you.

    Your Hosts

The owners of Appleby House and Rabbit Island Huts are Jane and John who also live on the property approximately 100 meters from the House and Huts.

Appleby House is very similar to a hotel experience, all rooms are very separate and private, with other spaces you can share with other guests if you would like - kitchen, outdoor entertainment areas and a downstairs lounge with open fire. It's a little bit b&b and a little bit hotel... It doesn't have 24 hour reception, but it does have lovely hosts (Jane and John) who are close by, and on hand if you need them.

The Rabbit Island Huts are another unique experience, they are a little bit hotel, little bit glamping and a little bit traditional Kiwi camping, all done with with comfort in mind. The huts are very environmentally focused with a small footprint, all timber locally milled from fallen trees, and using only organic oils and paints.

Now Jane and John are adding glamping tents to the mix - and with their flair for lovely styling, and brilliant hospitality, we know it's going to be a goodie!
