Kawakawa Station, Purple Hut

Cape Palliser, South Wairarapa

Kawakawa Sation, home of the incredible Kawakawa Station Walk, is located on Cape Palliser - 2 hours from Wellington City, 1.5 hours from Masterton and 1 hour from Martinborough.

The Purple Hut is a back-country bush hut at the foot of the Aorangi Forest Park on Kawakawa Station. Its primary purpose is for accommodation for Kawakawa Station's popular 3-Day farm walk, but when it's not in use by walkers, we're lucky enough to be able to offer it to Canopy Camping Escapes guests!

Transported by your hosts, in a 4WD vehicle, you'll enjoy a fantastic 25-minute four-wheel-driving adventure up the river bed and through the incredible scenery of this majestic sheep station.

Once there, you'll find the Purple Hut is set in a pretty clearing surrounded by mature native trees. The Otakaha Stream runs close to the hut, with crystal clear swimming holes creating inviting places to cool off during the heat of summer.

The hut is a two-bedroom ex-army hut brought in by keen hunters over 60 years ago. If walls could talk there would be many a tale to tell of the people and fun had here over the years! The original 'Purple Hut' has two bedrooms, a bathroom and a kitchen and dining space. Two cosy wee cabins have recently been added so that the hut can now sleep up to a total of 11 people across multiple rooms.

A stay at the Purple Hut is a total adventure - right from the moment you jump in the 4WD for your ride in. Between the atmospheric off-grid hut, the breath-taking clear night sky, the utterly remote location, stunning scenery, and the wildlife and nature that abound - it's a rare and magical thing for the average Kiwi to have access to such a special back-country spot.
