Eelbrook

Eelbrook

Wairarapa

Eelbrook is 5 minutes drive from Carterton in the Wairarapa, and 1 hour and 20 minutes drive from Wellington.

The spacious and beautifully decorated tent is situated in a pretty juvenile orchard surrounded by mature trees. Sleeping up to 4 adults, or 2 adults and up to 3 children, it's ideal for a group or family - and a great way to give the kids a taste of sleeping under canvas.

A small, lean-to kitchen is attached to the front of the tent with the toilet and shower tucked away to the rear of the tent.

The property is a 13-acre lifestyle block with a small spring-fed pond and creek. Mature trees along with a significant planting of natives make it a perfect habitat for native birds such as tui, bellbirds, fantails and silver eyes. During the summer the air is abuzz with dragonflies and often native lizards can be found sunbathing. At night, enjoy the incredible night sky of the Wairarapa.

Hosts' Margie and Christian also have a swimming pool at their home on the property, where glamping guests are welcome to cool off on a hot day.

  • Eating and Drinking

The tent at Eelbrook is self-catering. Just bring your own food and drink, and cook meals using the facilities provided in your kitchen. You'll find all the cutlery, crockery, pots and pans that you'll need.

If you fancy a meal out, your hosts recommend Balter in Carterton, but there are more award-winning restaurants in Greytown and Martinborough than you can shake a stick at, so you have plenty of options! If you're up for a longer drive, the Lake Ferry Pub on Cape Palliser is a great place for fish and chips with a view.

For coffee and cake, Finom cafe in Carterton has outstanding food and coffee, as does the award-winning Clareville Bakery.

The nearest store for stocking up on food and supplies is in Carterton, 5-minutes drive away.

  • Things to do

Eelbrook is a chance to experience sleeping under canvas in a pretty outdoor setting. Perfect for rest and relaxation, just kick back, read a book, battle it out over a board game, or jump in your hosts' pool next door (available for guests to use) on a hot summer day

But for those that want to get out and about, the Wairarapa has so much to offer for all ages and stages.

Families and active types can escape to the great outdoors at the Tararua National Park or Pukaha Mt Bruce, while those that are after a bit of culture and fine wine can enjoy a taste of the award-winning wine and food in the region. There is a fabulous foodie scene in the Wairarapa, with excellent shops and farmers' markets open on the weekends.

Shoppers will love the Greytown Mainstreet, with boutique clothing stores, antiques and gift shops.

There is also great cycling in the area, with the Rimutaka Rail Trail and several mountain bike parks.

  • Your hosts

Your hosts at Eelbrook are Christian, Margie, Daisy, Harry and dogs, Holly and Bear.

Six years ago, Margie and Christian bought their property near Carterton as a weekend escape from the rat race in Wellington. They loved their little slice of the Wairarapa so much, it wasn't long before they decided to move to the area full time. Margie works for the Neurological Foundation and Christian is the owner of the local driving Miss Daisy Franchise.

The tent was originally built as their alternative to a bach. They loved coming over at the weekends and simply pitching a tent in the paddocks. To have something a little more sophisticated but still with the laidback camping feel was ideal for them. When they moved to the Wairarapa permanently, they lived in the tent for two summers while Christian converted the barn into a house. Two of the happiest summers they have ever had.

One of the things the family most loves about their property is the different pace of life, and the connection they get from living on the land. They notice the seasonal changes more than ever before and the amount of native animals they get on their small block is incredible. Over the last 6 years, they have not used any pesticides or chemical fertilisers and have seen a huge increase in insects, freshwater invertebrates and lizards, which in turn has seen a huge increase in native birds.

Eelbrook is named after Eelbrook Common in London where Margie and Christian first met, but also for the eel-filled creek that runs through the property.
