Glamping at Hurunui Jacks
Hurunui Jacks is situated on the West Coast of the South Island, just 12 kilometres from the centre of Hokitika, and metres from the spectacular West Coast Wilderness cycle trail.
It's a very special sort of place - run by a very special sort of couple.
John Plows and Maureen Cook own this piece of Kiwi paradise. And with their own unique brand of West Coast hospitality and style - they've created an unforgettable glamping experience.
Your luxury canvas tent rests on a private spot on the banks of the Kaniere River, nestled amongst ancient virgin forest. Surrounded by National Park and Conservation land - it's 30 acres of total peace and tranquility - and the perfect couples get-away.
The campsite has a rustic, fully covered and enclosed camp kitchen with hot water heated by an old-school, wood-fired chippie. You can either cook on the gas BBQ, gas rings - or try camp-style cooking over an open fire.
Enjoy a steaming hot shower in the camp bathroom...and later enjoy a glass of wine and a soak in an outdoor bath under the stars. Then, tucked up in your comfortable bed, between 100% cotton sheets and under a pure wool duvet, you'll be able to lie back and relax to the sounds of the river and the bush…
The tent is kept warm and toasty with a wood-burning stove, so summer or winter, you'll be camping in complete comfort.
On the property is a lake filled with rainbow trout. Give fly-fishing a try! Or simply take a walk through the private marked walk that meanders through the native bush.
A paradise for wildlife - bush robins, fantails, tuis, bellbirds, and native wood pigeons - flit through the moss covered rimu, matai and totara trees.
If canvas walls aren't for you, don't worry, Maureen and John also have the atmospheric and cosy cottage accommodation 'The Nest'.

693 Lake Kaniere Road
Hurunui Jacks is approximately 12km inland from Hokitika and 13km from Hokitika Airport.
Approaching from the South on State Highway 6, turn right at the sign for Lake Kaniere (or left if you're coming from the North), into Stafford Street. Bella Vista Motel is on the corner. Follow the signs to Lake Kaniere.
At Kaniere you'll see a g.a.s Station. Shortly after, there is a left turn from Kaniere Road into Lake Kaniere Road (this is signposted Lake Kaniere). Make sure you take this turn, DO NOT follow the road round to the right (the Kaniere - Kowhitirangi Rd.) this will take you out towards the Hokitika Gorge (as stunning as it is, you might not want to go there just yet!)
You'll know you've made it when you see a Hurunui Jacks sign on the road side.
Print out a Hurunui Jacks info sheet with address, host contact details, and google map directions, for your drive right here.
Eating and Drinking
Bring your own food and have a truly unique experience cooking with the old coal range or campfire. Or keep it simple and use the gas BBQ or gas rings (perfect for a quick cup of tea).
The nearest supermarket for supplies is the New World supermarket in Hokitika, approximately 12 kms away (15 minutes drive time).
You'll find all the cutlery, crockery, pots and pans that you will need in the camp kitchen.
Alternatively, treat yourselves to some of the great local nosh! Here are our recommendations for places to eat and drink in Hokitika:
- Fat Pipis Pizza - best pizza ever.
- Phil at The Regent Theatre Cafe - for the best coffee.
- West Coast Wine Company - drinks and nibbles in a secret garden. They often have live music and a 'bring your own food' policy!
- Porky's Takeaways - best fish and chips on the Coast!
Things To Do
ON THE PROPERTY
- Go for a bush walk through marked tracks in our private native bush
- Feed the rainbow trout in the lake
- Take one of the three mountain bikes we have for guest use and go for a bike ride on the West Coast Wilderness Trail
- Battle it out over scrabble or dominoes, or one of the other board games kept in the tent
- Soak in the tub with a good book and a glass of wine.
IN THE LOCAL AREA
- Pick up some good old Kiwi fish and chips from Porky’s Takeaways, grab a bottle of vino or a few beers, light a fire on the beach and watch the sun set. Stunning.
- Have a mooch around the metropolis of Hokitika. Check out the arty shops, have a real fruit ice cream from Sweet Alice’s, they make their own fudge too.
- Best 2 – 3 hour trip from Hurunui Jacks….drive up to Lake Kaniere, past the amazing Dorothy Falls, the stunning Hokitika Gorge. Maybe call in for a beer at one of the local pubs - The Kokatahi Hotel or The Empire Hotel at Kaniere and meet some of the eclectic locals.
- There are lots of beautiful and interesting walks and bike rides around the area. The Kaniere Water Race track is a classic. There are bikes if you would like to take off for a cycle. And….the West Coast Wilderness Trail, part of the NZ wide cycle trail initiative, is right on the doorstep.
- Neighbour, Bevan Climo, just a 1km or so down the road, is a renowned pounamu (greenstone) carver. Check out his amazing work. He plays a mean guitar too.
John Plows and Maureen Cook are a couple with a diverse and fascinating background.
John (now 67) came to NZ when he was 3 years old from the UK. He started out his career as the first screen printing apprentice in NZ - his first printing job was the original 4 Square Man poster.
Since then, he's been involved in everything from clothing retail (ex-director of Kiwi clothing company Global Culture) through to guiding hunting, fishing shooting types in the New Zealand wilderness.
John bought Hurunui Jacks, in 2000 and knew that he'd finally 'found his place'. He then set about convincing Christchurch based Maureen that this was the place for her too. Word on the street, is that she was finally wooed by the promise of a chicken coop and her own little flock!
Yorkshire lass, Maureen hasn't looked back - and now wouldn't dream of exchanging life on the West Coast for anything else.
Since settling in Hokitika, John and Maureen have combined their experience and launched their own Hurunui Jacks clothing and merchandise range (West Coast inspired - whitebait/gumboots/Monteith's beer!). You can buy their fantastic range either online on their website or in the i-SITES up and down the Coast. They also have plenty of stock on hand, so if you love what you see, you can also buy direct from them during your stay at a special discounted rate, just for guests.
As well as their beautiful luxury campsite, John and Maureen also have 'The Nest'. The Nest is cosy, comfortable cottage accommodation and it's available to rent right here. Perfect for those that prefer solid walls over canvas!

Thank you for creating such a wonderful haven; we were lucky to have enjoyed it on a clear night (when the brazier was in full roar) and during a spectacular West Coast storm that lit up the tent (when the fire and glow of candlelight created the most deliciously cosy atmosphere). We couldn't recommend Hurunui Jacks any higher; an experience everyone should try. Thank you!"

"We had a splendid weekend away, at Hurunui Jacks. Such a romantic and peaceful getaway. We truly felt the most relaxed we have ever felt and would go back in a heartbeat. Our hosts were lovely and friendly and we just had the ultimate weekend away. Would defiantly recommend Hurunui Jacks and can't wait to explore other Canopy Camping sites."

"Our stay at Hunrunui Jacks was like a dream. Maureen and John were so lovely and gave us a very warm welcome, showing us the ropes and letting us know what to expect and what we could do during our stay. The bed was very comfy and super warm, we had gorgeous lanterns all set up ready to use, and even some ready made treats to enjoy by the fire - which was already set up and waiting for us when we arrived. The scenery is magical, and we loved everything about it and wish we stayed longer. Will definately be returning to Hurunui Jacks and telling all our family and friends to do so too!"

"5 star resorts have nothing on this truly special place, it turned the accomodation into the adventure and was something totally unique and fun, totally private and relaxing, we felt worlds away from the hustle and bustle yet still had a glorious king sized bed to climb into after a bottle of red and a long soak in the outdoor bath, bliss! Cannot recommend this place enough!!"

"A true get-away from it all experience. Luxurious tent nestled in the bush, gold panning right outside your door & a lovely bath in the middle of the bush with loads of hot water. All the good stuff of camping & none of the bad stuff."

"We absolutely loved getting away from it all, no power, no phones - it refreshes the soul and makes a wonderful change from everyday life. The tent is amazing and so comfortable and private. The setting couldn't be better - nestled in the bush next to a bubbling stream - bliss!"

"We absolutely recommend this place for people who by any reason wants to feel like camping but wants some comfort or needs some comfort. The balance between luxury and deep forest camping is perfect, the place is amazingly beautiful and the hosts are the sweetest and most interesting people."

"We felt as though we were on Safari- snug and cosy in our huge tent with romantic mosquito netting artfully draped about. No wild animals though, thank goodness- just peace and seclusion. A magical break from reality - loved reading by the brazier in the fading light and watching the moon rise through the bush."
